We are delighted to announce that fitness guru and melanoma survivor Shannan Ponton is once again joining us as our official 2018 Melanoma March Ambassador.
Shannan is proof that melanoma can strike anyone. He was holidaying in Bali with his wife when she noticed a suspicious looking mole on the back of his thigh. She booked him in for a skin check immediately on his return to Sydney – it was melanoma.
Shannan says he’s one of the lucky ones, as despite undergoing two rounds of surgery and now sporting a 20cm scar, his melanoma hadn’t spread. With his mum also a melanoma survivor, and several of his mates having early-stage melanoma detected after Shannan’s experience prompted them to get a skin check, he is passionate about raising awareness.
“Melanoma doesn’t discriminate and it is vital that everyone protects themselves and their families from the sun,” Shannan said. “Melanoma March is a fun family event that not only serves as a timely reminder about the importance of sun-safety, but it also supports life-saving research.
“Living a sun-smart lifestyle, early detection and investing in research are crucial if Australia is to win the melanoma battle,” he said.
Shannan is urging all Australians to join him in signing up for Melanoma March 2018.
